Samenvatting

Dit hoofdstuk gaat in op de voeding van patiënten op de intensive care (IC) en welke problemen zich daarbij kunnen voordoen. Ernstige ziekte gaat namelijk gepaard met een complex van hormonale en metabole veranderingen - de metabole stressrespons. Deze reactie maakt het mogelijk om de kritieke fase van de ziekte door te komen. De intensiteit en duur van de stressrespons zijn van grote invloed op de voedingstoestand. Iedere patiënt die langer dan 48 uur op de IC opgenomen ligt, loopt een risico op het ontwikkelen van ziektegerelateerde ondervoeding. Aan bod komen het voeden in de verschillende metabole fasen, voedingsbehoefte, voedingswijzen en monitoring van het voedingsbeleid van IC-patiënten.
