Samenvatting

De belangstelling voor de invloed van videogames op ons dagelijks leven neemt alsmaar toe. Het spelen van first-person shooters vereist een flexibele mindset om snel te kunnen reageren op snel bewegende visuele en auditieve stimuli, en snel tussen verschillende subtaken te kunnen schakelen. Deze studie onderzocht of en in welke mate ervaring met het spelen van videogames invloed heeft op taken waarbij cognitieve controle belangrijk is. Gamers en niet-gamers voerden een task-switching-taak uit die een betrouwbare index geeft van cognitieve flexibiliteit. Zoals voorspeld, lieten gamers kleinere switching costs (grotere cognitieve flexibiliteit) zien dan niet-gamers. Onze bevindingen leveren bewijs voor de hypothese dat het spelen van first-person shooters de cognitieve flexibiliteit verbetert.
