Samenvatting

Doel: Het doel van deze studie is onderzoeken of pestgedrag gerelateerd is aan psychosociale gezondheid en het ervaren geluk thuis en op school.Methode: In een dwarsdoorsnede onderzoek worden 982 leerlingen van een Nederlandse scholengemeenschap in de leeftijd van 11-19 jaar vergeleken op grond van hun psychosociale gezondheid middels destrengths and difficulties questionnaire, en ervaren geluk thuis en op school.Resultaten: Er zijn 723 ‘neutrale’ kinderen, 133 pesters, 61 gepesten en 65 kinderen die zowel pesten als gepest worden. De drie verschillende pestgroepen rapporteren allen vaker psychosociale problemen ten opzichte van kinderen die niet betrokken zijn bij pesten. Kinderen die alleen pesten blijken vaker ongelukkig te zijn thuis, maar juist vaker gelukkig op school dan kinderen die niet betrokken zijn bij pesten.Conclusie: Uit de resultaten blijkt dat pesters rapporteren gelukkiger te zijn op school en belang lijken te hebben bij hun pestgedrag. Er zou meer inzicht verkregen moeten worden in de motieven van kinderen om te pesten en in hun bereidwilligheid dit gedrag te veranderen. Hierdoor kunnen anti-pest interventies mogelijk beter en effectiever worden ingezet.
