Letsel aan het hoofd overkomt ieder jaar ongeveer 2% van de bevolking, tweemaal zoveel mannen als vrouwen (Jennett 1996). In ongeveer één op de zeven gevallen is het letsel dermate ernstig dat opname in het ziekenhuis nodig is. In de West-Europese landen overlijden 3 tot 8% van degenen die worden opgenomen, terwijl de rest in meerdere of mindere mate herstelt. De oorzaak van het letsel is meestal een verkeersongeval, vaak een valpartij en minder vaak een geweldsdelict. De grootste groepen slachtoffers zijn kinderen en jong-volwassen mannen.
