The question, “Are you for or against evolution?” may seem frivolous in the 21st century. Since Charles Darwin published the Origin of Species in 1859, evolutionary theory has been overwhelmingly supported by fossil histories of plants, animals, and humans. Fossils of human ancestors who lived more than a million years ago and sophisticated human artifacts from thousands of years ago fire the imagination—what were our ancient ancestors like? At what point did they become “human”? How could they achieve so much without modern tools? What did they think and talk about? Or did they think and talk at all? Ironically, as evidence for evolution becomes ever stronger, deniers of evolution fight harder to keep our children from learning about it. …
