Nieuwe interventie voor paren met chronische pijn en relatieproblemen: een pilotstudie

Samenvatting

Chronische pijn is vaak de oorzaak van psychisch lijden en van relatieproblemen. Dit raakt zowel de mensen met pijn als hun partners. Het belang van de sociale context is in het verleden al vaker reden geweest om bij pijninterventies ook partners te betrekken. Het welzijn van de partners zelf was daarbij echter nooit een doel. Zij werden alleen bij de behandeling betrokken als coach of begeleider in het proces van pijnmanagement. In dit artikel bespreken we de uitvoerbaarheid, acceptatie en voorlopige resultaten van een nieuwe, relatiegerichte interventie die focust op het welzijn van (echt)paren die kampen met relatieproblemen en met chronische pijn bij één of beide partners. Vijftien paren hebben deelgenomen aan de zes sessies van de face-to-face interventie ‘Mindful Living and Relating’, en vulden daarover vóór en na de behandeling een aantal vragenlijsten in. De voorlopige uitkomsten van de interventie – en de gegevens over de betrokkenheid en de ervaringen van de deelnemers – zijn gebaseerd op zowel kwantitatieve als kwalitatieve analysemethoden. Uit de analyses blijkt dat de deelnemende koppels zich bij de behandeling betrokken hebben gevoeld en dat zij er naar eigen zeggen tevreden over zijn. De deelnemers die de behandeling hebben afgerond (N = 28; 14 paren) rapporteren een vermindering van symptomen van depressie en een toename van zowel de tevredenheid over de relatie als de responsiviteit van de partner. Bovendien rapporteren de deelnemers met chronische pijn een afname van de verstorende werking van de pijn in hun dagelijks functioneren. Uit de interviews achteraf blijkt dat de deelnemers de behandeling voor beide partners verkiezen boven individuele therapie voor chronische pijn en relatieproblemen. De koppels die zich voor de pilot hebben ingeschreven vinden uiteindelijk dat de behandeling qua uitvoerbaarheid goed te doen is, hoewel het moeizame wervingsproces aanvankelijk anders deed vermoeden. Verder bevat dit artikel aanbevelingen voor onderzoekers die geïnteresseerd zijn in het ontwikkelen van psychologische interventies die de kwaliteit van leven bij chronische ziekte kunnen verbeteren.
