“A Regular Guy: Growing Up With Autism—A Family’s Story of Love and Acceptance” is the memoir of a San Francisco Bay Area family who raised an autistic son, Matthew, born in 1986. Written in a personable style by Matthew’s mother, Laura Shumaker, the book details the Shumaker family’s journey from awareness that Matthew was not developing typically; to Matthew’s Autism diagnosis; through elementary school, his adolescence, and finally their quest to find a suitable private high school and longer term residential solution for Matthew. The book effectively explores ‘typical’ intra-family relationships—bonds between a mother and her adult daughter; between parents and children; among siblings; and to a more limited extent between a husband and wife—in each case detailing how Autism impacted their relationships overtime. …
