7. Kijken naar meervoudige ontwikkeling

Samenvatting

Adolescenten ontwikkelen zich op meerdere gebieden tegelijkertijd. Ik noem dat meervoudige ontwikkeling. Een belangrijke vraag is daarom hoe verschillende ontwikkelingsprocessen samenhangen. Er zijn twee manieren om naar deze samenhang te kijken. Bij voorspellingsmodellen gebruiken we een proces vroeger in het leven om een proces later in het leven te voorspellen, bijvoorbeeld dat een geringe zelfcontrole in de vroege adolescentie delinquentie in de late adolescentie voorspelt. Voorspellingsmodellen zeggen niet meteen iets over de invloed die verschillende processen in de ontwikkeling op elkaar uitoefenen. Dat doen ontwikkelingsvolgordemodellen wel. Daarin bestuderen we twee processen die in principe tegelijkertijd optreden (A en B) en laten zien dat proces A van invloed is op de ontwikkeling van B terwijl het omgekeerde minder of niet het geval is. Inhoudelijk laat onderzoek vijf patronen van meervoudige ontwikkeling zien: (1) goede relaties met ouders en vrienden leiden tot goede partnerrelaties; (2) als adolescenten zich goed ontwikkelen op het ene gebied doen ze dat meestal ook op andere gebieden; (3) ouders dragen denken en doen over op hun kinderen; (4) psychopathologie van adolescenten leidt tot slechtere persoonlijke relaties, en (5) psychopathologie van adolescenten zorgt ervoor dat ouders hun geen autonomie geven.
