In Zweden geven 20 procent van de vrouwenen 8 procent van de mannen tussen 31 en 76 jaar aan last te hebben van constipatie.2) De prevalentie van constipatie ligt in de westerse wereld tussen de 2 en 27 procent. Constipatie komt meer voor bij vrouwen dan bij mannen, meer bij kleurlingen dan bij blanken, meer bij kinderen dan bij volwassenen en meer bij oudere personen.3,4) De prevalentie van obstipatie bij kinderen varieert wereldwijd van 0,7 tot 29,6 procent.5) Een van de oorzaken van deze variatie is dat voor de definitie van obstipatie verschillende criteria in gebruik zijn. …
