Rapid weight gain in the first 6 months of life is associated with overweight and obesity during childhood. Formula-fed infants are more likely to become overweight, which may be related to the higher protein content of formula compared with human milk. Recently, we determined the infant requirements of each essential amino acid. Based on these results we conducted a newborn piglet study that suggested a possible protein reduction of 20% in formula fed infants. We hypothesize that an infant formula with an optimized amino acid composition and a lower protein content results in a healthier body composition compared to infants fed standard formula. …
