Extract

The excitatory amino acid neurotransmitter of Glutamate has a major role in the brain. However, it has a balance. Excess glutamate is neurotoxic. Glutamate transporters control the level of glutamate in synaptic space. There are different types of glutamate transporters. One of the transporters is GLT-1, which is distributed throughout different brain regions and spinal cord, and which is not present in the white matter (Maragakis and Rothstein 2001). GLT-1 has an important role for removal of glutamate (Danbolt 2001; Robinson 1998). In order to prevent excitotoxicity, these transporters keep glutamate synaptic concentrations low. …
