In Children at Play: Learning gender in the early years, Barbara Martin argues that young children need adult intervention and support if they are to successfully break the mold of gender stereotypes and become the individual they want to be and not just the individual society believes they should be. Children learn at an early age, mostly through educational and peer interactions, what it means to be a boy and what it means to be a girl, and are quick to demonstrate that they understand these roles. However, Martin argues that simply because society believes boys should act in a specific “masculine” way and girls should act in a specific “feminine” way does not mean it is correct or that children can only act out their gender in one specific manner. …
