Douma, J. C. H., & Dekker, M. C. (2007). Antisocial behaviours in youths with mild intellectual disabilities, Kind en Adolescent, 28 (3), 182-196.
In a sample of 526 11 to 24-year-olds with mild to borderline intellectual disabilities (id), we studied the prevalence, persistence and five-year predictors of five types of antisocial and delinquent behaviours (adbs, such as ‘mean to others’ ‘property destruction’, and ‘arson/theft’). Most adbs were exhibited by 10%-20% of the youths with id. These behaviours were fairly persistent over a five-year period. Boys with id engaged more often in adbs than boys without id. This was not true for girls with id (compared without id). adbs in youths with id were predominantly predicted by age (younger), sex (boy) and behavioural problems. Interventions particularly need to focus on this risk group.
