In a recent letter in this journal, Gough (
2021) argues that the term theory of mind should be eliminated because it breeds conflation and miscommunication. For example, “the ‘theory of mind’ purportedly lacked by autistic people, and the ‘theory of mind’ purportedly lacked by non-human animals, are not the same thing—We have a clear case of conflation and miscommunication.” (p.1), and “pioneers in [this field] have led the way in making the conflation.” (p. 2).
