Samenvatting

Borstkanker is een veelvoorkomende ziekte, vooral in de westerse wereld. In 2010 zijn in Nederland 95.456 nieuwe kankergevallen geregistreerd, waaronder 13.257 vrouwen en 94 mannen met borstkanker. Bovendien hadden nog eens 1996 vrouwen en 9 mannen een niet-invasieve vorm van borstkanker. De totale sterfte aan kanker in 2010 bedroeg ruim 40.000, van wie 3213 vrouwen en 32 mannen aan borstkanker overleden. Voor vrouwen in de leeftijdscategorie van 30 tot 60 jaar is borstkanker een van de belangrijkste doodsoorzaken.
